When I asked why I had received a request to write about Petrolatum and Mineral Oil, I was told that there have been a lot of questions concerning these two ingredients, and why we use them in a couple of our products. Could there really be a concern that these two ingredients indeed “suffocate the skin and trap toxins”?
Frankly, I was stunned! I thought, “Where on earth does this ‘information’ come from?” Then…I got on the Internet and did a little snooping around. What I found was astonishing!
I cannot believe the propaganda that is being perpetuated on the Internet! I have so much to say about all this, I’m not sure where to begin paper writer service
First, the skin is nourished and obtains oxygen from the bloodstream – not the air.
Second, the skin releases its “toxins” by the sweat glands. Mineral Oil/Petrolatum in the percentages used in lotions and creams does not prevent the skin from sweating.
Third, the temporary occlusive barrier formed by mineral oil/petrolatum does not interfere with or disrupt the skin’s ability to keep foreign substances like microbes out. To the contrary, if skin is severely dry, its lipid barrier is compromised. When the lipid barrier is compromised, it NEEDS a barrier to prevent further dryness. Dry, cracked skin is the ideal environment whereby foreign substances like microbes can penetrate and cause more serious problems
Fourth, it seems that a lot of cosmetic companies would like the consumer to believe that Petrolatum and Mineral Oil are not Natural (and even if they weren’t, it would be O.K.) but the TRUTH is they are refined from crude oil, which is as natural as any other earth-derived bio-active.
The TRUTH is that Petrolatum and Mineral oil (which is derived from Petrolatum) are considered among the safest, non-irritating and effective healing ingredients known today.
The TRUTH is that Food Grade Mineral Oil (used in Kara Vita products) is NON-comedogenic.
The TRUTH is, as with almost ALL raw materials, there are different grades of purity available for purchase. Is there an industrial grade of petrolatum? Yes, and it is used in industry for mechanical lubrication. This has no relationship to the highly refined and purified Food Grade or USP Mineral Oil and Petrolatum that Kara Vita uses.
Petrolatum/Mineral Oil was discovered in 1872 and within a very short period of time was used in the pharmaceutical industry due to its outstanding stability. Cosmetic manufacturers noticed its proven success in the pharmaceutical industry, and they began incorporating it in products for effective moisturizer.
